Unemployed during the year: claiming a tax repayment early

Quick answer

When you stop working part-way through a year, the credits allocated to the rest of the year go unused, so tax you already paid is often refundable. Rather than wait until January, you can claim an unemployment repayment in once you have been out of work for at least four weeks, or eight weeks if you are receiving a taxable social welfare payment such as Jobseeker's Benefit. Revenue recalculates your tax to date using the credits due so far and repays the difference.

How to claim

Check that your former employer has ceased your employment in Revenue's records; it shows in myAccount under Jobs and Pensions.
Wait the qualifying period: four weeks with no income, or eight weeks if you receive a taxable welfare payment.
In myAccount open PAYE Services and choose Claim unemployment repayment.
Repeat the claim at intervals if you remain out of work; each claim releases further credits.

If you start a new job

Pitfalls

Jobseeker's Benefit is taxable and reduces the refund; Jobseeker's Allowance is not taxable.
If you move abroad, use the leaving Ireland route instead.
